Jason Statham to star in 'Layer Cake' sequel
'The Expendables' star will take up anti-hero role made famous by Daniel Craig
The action star will take on the lead role made famous by Daniel Craig in the 2004 film, in follow-up, Viva La Madness.
Both movies are based on novels written by J.J. Connolly, who will adapt his book into a screenplay, much like he did with the first film. This time around the plot is expected to focus on Connolly's nameless anti-hero - who was last seen trying to survive a gunshot wound at the end of the last movie - trying to retire to a beach life. But he soon finds himself mixing with drug cartels, getting involved in money laundering and electronic fraud.
Statham and his manager and producing partner Steve Chasman have acquired the rights to J.J. Connolly's novel, Deadline reports.
Viva La Madness will be the second film that Statham and Chasman produce as part of their SJ Pictures production company. They recently finished production on Heat, with Statham working alongside Sofia Vergara, Milo Ventimiglia and Stanley Tucci. The film is due for release in 2014.
Statham also recently finished filming The Expendables 3 and is currently shooting Fast & Furious 7. Craig meanwhile, is set to appear in the next 007 movie, Bond 24 in 2015.
