Jeremy Renner unhappy with his character in 'The Avengers'

Actor criticises portrayal of his character, Hawkeye, in superhero flick

Actor Jeremy Renner has revealed he is unhappy with how his character Hawkeye came across in The Avengers.

The superhero flick was a staggering success at the box office, earning $1.5 billion (£960 million) to become the third most successful film of all time behind Titanic and Avatar.

However, according to the LA Times, Renner – who is currently starring in The Bourne Legacy, which opens in UK screens on August 13 – was not pleased with his character's role in the film.

"For 90% of the movie, I'm not the character I signed on to play," he said. "It's kind of a vacancy. [He's] not even a bad guy, because there's not really a consciousness to him."

He went on to add:

To take away who that character is and just have him be this robot, essentially, and have him be this minion for evil that Loki uses... I was limited, you know what I mean? I was a terminator in a way. Fun stunts. But is there any sort of emotional content or thought process? No.

Earlier this week (August 8), it was reported that director Joss Whedon will return to oversee a sequel to The Avengers. The flick is tentatively scheduled for the summer of 2015, but Marvel already have three others film due for release before then with Iron Man 3 due in May 2013, Thor: The Dark World set for release in November 2013 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier in April 2014.
