Jessica Chastain based punk character on Crystal Castles' Alice Glass
The Oscar-nominated actress says Glass is 'so rad' and admits she copied her haircut
Jessica Chastain has revealed that she based her latest film character on Crystal Castles' Alice Glass.
In new horror movie Mama, Chastain plays a character called Annabel who jams in an amateur punk band. Discussing the role with MTV, Chastain said: "It's on the page that Annabel plays punk, and she plays bass in a punk band. She's not like Lisbeth Salander. She's not hardcore, full-on. She's like the girl who went to community college, hangs out with her friends, loves punk music, and plays bass. She'll never be famous. She's not incredibly good at it."
However, to get into Annabel's punk mindset, Chastain decided to channel a real-life rock star - by copying her haircut. The actress explained: "From there, talking to Andy, the director, we talked about [my] look for that. He sent me pictures of Alice Glass. I thought, 'Oh, my God. She's so rad. That's a great idea for the character'. So that's where we started with the hair, thinking 'Alice Glass'."
Mama came out in the US last Friday (January 18) and topped the box office there over the weekend. It opens in UK cinemas on February 22 - scroll down and click 'play' to watch the trailer.
Meanwhile, Chastain will compete for the Best Actress award at the Oscars on February 24. She has been nominated for her as a CIA agent in Kathryn Bigelow's military drama Zero Dark Thirty, which is showing in cinemas now.
