Johnny Depp 'about to sign up for 'Alice In Wonderland' sequel'

Johnny Depp is "in final discussions" to return for Disney's sequel to Alice In Wonderland, Deadline reports.

Directed by Tim Burton and released in 2010, Alice In Wonderland cast Mia Wasikowska in the title role alongside Depp as The Mad Hatter. The Lewis Carroll adaptation's bumper cast also included Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter and Matt Lucas.

Although reviews were mixed, Burton's film went on to gross over $1,02 billion (£680 million) worldwide, placing it 14th on the all-time list.

Plans for a sequel emerged last December (2012) when Disney hired original screenwriter Linda Woolverton to script a follow-up. Burton won't be returning for Alice In Wonderland 2, however, and James Bobin (The Muppets) is set to take over the director's chair.

Depp's latest film The Lone Ranger opens in UK cinemas on August 9 but it's already flopped in the US, where it came out earlier this month (July). He's currently filming sci-fi flick Transcendence in LA with Morgan Freeman and Cillian Murphy.
