Johnny Depp to play Tonto in 'Lone Ranger' film

Johnny Depp and Pirates Of The Caribbean director Gore Verbinski are reuniting to create a movie update of The Lone Ranger. Rumours that such a movie was to be made have been circulating since 2007, when it was first announced that Jerry Bruckheimer, the producer of the three Pirates Of The Caribbean movies that followed the original, wanted to make the film with Verbinski.

The new film will be based on the 1950s radio and TV show.

Depp has signed to play Tonto, the lead character's Native American companion, reports Deadline.com. There's no word who will be playing the lead yet, or when the film will be released.

Depp and Verbinski’s next film, Rango – which is about a pet chameleon who lives in a terrarium – is released on March 4 next year.
