Other cast members for the Caribbean set comedy, besides Depp, include Amber Heard, Richard Jenkins, Giovanni Ribisi and The Dark Knight's Aaron Eckhart.

Depp was friends with Hunter S. Thompson, who died in 2005, and previously starred in the film adaptation of Thompson's most famous work, Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas,

The Rum Diary has had a long and difficult journey to the big screen with a film intended from as early as 2000. At one point Benicio Del Toro was set to direct his Fear and Loathing co-star in the movie.

Eventually the project was picked up by GK Films and Bruce Robinson, the man behind Withnail and I, came on board to direct.

The Rum Diary is due for release in the UK on November 4.
