Lars von Trier's 'Nymphomaniac' splices actors with body doubles for graphic sex scenes

Lars von Trier's controversial new film project Nymphomaniac will use digital technology to create incredibly graphic sex scenes.

The two-part movie traces the sexual progress of a woman, played by Charlotte Gainsbourg, from her youth to the age of 50. Von Trier has managed to attract a brave ensemble cast including Shia LaBeouf, Uma Thurman, Jamie Bell and Christian Slater.

The director shot Nymphomaniac in Belgium and Germany between August and November last year (2012), but because he's refused to give interviews since his infamous Nazi gaffe at Cannes in 2011, the exact nature of the sex scenes remained unknown.

However, producer Louse Vesth has now clarified precisely what Nymphomaniac will show. "We shot the actors pretending to have sex and then had the body doubles, who really did have sex, and in post we will digital-impose the two," she told The Hollywood Reporter. "So above the waist it will be the star and the below the waist it will be the doubles."

Nymphomaniac is due to premiere in von Trier's native Denmark this December (2013) and won't just be an upmarket porn film, insists the producer. "Lars has thrown everything in this one. It's about religion, about God, about philosophy. There's so much to talk about with this movie. I hope he changes his mind and starts giving interviews again," Vesth said.
