'Les Misérables' earns standing ovation at first screening
Director Tom Hooper and star Anne Hathaway attend the exclusive preview in New York City
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the musical movie drew "loud applause" for each of its big song-and-dance numbers, which include the Susan Boyle favourite 'I Dreamed A Dream'. Once the credits began to roll, the film apparently received a "raucous standing ovation".
Before the screening, the movie was introduced by director Tom Hooper, who previously helmed Oscar winner The King's Speech. Hooper revealed that he had only completed Les Misérables at 2am that Wednesday (November 21) and told the crowd: "You are the very first people to see the film."
After the screening, Hooper was joined for a Q&A session by four of the film's stars: Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne and Samantha Barks. The film's ensemble cast also includes Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, Helena Bonham-Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen.
Les Misérables, which is being tipped as a strong Oscar contender, opens in cinemas on January 11, 2013. You can watch the trailer at the bottom of this article.
