Troubled star sentenced to three months behind bars

Lindsay Lohan given 90-day jail sentence for breaching probation

Lindsay Lohan has been sentenced to three months in jail for violating probation. The actress, 24, burst into tears after the ruling in Beverly Hills, California yesterday (July 6), reports BBC News.

Lohan has also been ordered to undergo a rehabilitation programme after breaking the terms of her probation in a 2007 drugs case. Superior Court judge Marsha Revel issued the sentence after hearing evidence from employees of a court-ordered alcohol treatment programme, which Lohan repeatedly failed to attend.

A tearful Lohan issued an apology to the court, saying, "I did do everything I was told to do and did the best I could to balance jobs and showing up. It wasn't vacation, it wasn't some sort of a joke."

But Judge Revel dismissed Lohan's apology as insincere, comparing it to "somebody who cheats and thinks it isn't cheating if she doesn't get caught".

The three-month sentence is triple what prosecutors had initially sought for Lohan.

Judge Revel had previously revoked Lohan's probation and ordered her to wear the ankle monitor after the starlet missed a court date in May. She was promoting a film project at the Cannes Film Festival at the time and claimed her passport was stolen.

The actress was not immediately taken into custody and will be permitted to surrender on July 20. She will have to wear an ankle alcohol tag until then.
