'Luther' movie starring Idris Elba could shoot next year

The planned Luther movie could shoot next year (2014), the show's creator Neil Cross has revealed.

Cross confirmed at the Edinburgh Television Festival over the weekend that there are no plans to make any further episodes of his hit TV series because star Idris Elba is now in too high demand.

However, Cross also revealed that a Luther movie is in the works and the BBC reports that he has shared further details, explaining that the film will act as a prequel to the TV series.

"I've written the script and we hope to get the film made next year," Cross said. "Idris is a brilliant leading man and we've hoped to turn Luther into a movie for a long time. It will follow his career in the earlier days, when he is still married to Zoe (Indira Varma), and the final scene in the film is the first of the initial TV series."

Series three of the crime drama aired on BBC One last month (July) following earlier series in 2010 and 2011. Elba, who won a Golden Globe last year (2012) for his performance as troubled detective DCI John Luther, has since landed several high-profile film roles.

As well as appearing in Pacific Rim, a monster movie from director Guillermo del Toro that opened last month (July), he'll be seen in October's Thor: The Dark World and is being tipped for an Oscar nomination for his performance in forthcoming Mandela biopic Long Walk To Freedom, due in cinemas next January (2013).
