'Man Of Steel' passes half billion mark at global box office

Man Of Steel has now raked in over $500 million (£330 million) at the global box office.

The Superman reboot began opening in cinemas worldwide on June 12 and has now grossed $248.7 million in the US and $271.7 million internationally for a global total of $520.4 million (£342.1 million), Box Office Mojo confirms.

The only film released in 2013 to have proven more popular with cinemagoers across the globe is Iron Man 3. Since it came out at the end of April, the Marvel sequel has taken over $1.2 billion (£790 million), making it the fifth highest-grossing movie of all-time.

"This success for Man of Steel is a great 75th birthday present for this iconic character," Warner Bros' president of US distribution Dan Fellman said in a statement. "The film took Superman back to his roots for a new generation of moviegoers, who have once again embraced Krypton and Kansas' favourite son."

Man Of Steel stars British actor Henry Cavill as Clark Kent aka Superman and Amy Adams as Lois Lane. It was directed by Zack Snyder (Watchmen) from a script by David S Goyer (Blade, Jumper) with Christopher Nolan, director of The Dark Knight trilogy, serving as an executive producer.

Man Of Steel 2 has already been fast-tracked by Warner Bros and both Snyder and Goyer are set to return, though it's unknown whether Nolan will reprise his role as executive producer.
