Martin Freeman to take the lead in 'The Hobbit'

'The Office' actor to star as Bilbo Baggins

Martin Freeman has landed the role of Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit, producer Peter Jackson has announced.

The Lord Of The Rings director, who is overseeing the film based on the book that takes place before the trilogy, praised The Office actor's versatility.

"Martin is intelligent, funny, surprising and brave, exactly like Bilbo," he explaoned. "I feel incredibly proud to be able to announce that he is our Hobbit."

British actor Ian Holm played the older Bilbo Baggins in Jackson's Lord Of The Rings movies.

Meanwhile Richard Armitage from the TV series MI-5, will play Thorin Oakenshield, the leader of the Company Of Dwarves who accompanies Baggins on his quest.

The role is Freeman's biggest movie part to date, having previously appeared in British comedies Hot Fuzz and Nativity.

He recently played Dr Watson in the BBC's Sherlock.
