Matt Damon on Ben Affleck as Batman: 'It's safe to say I won't be Robin'
Petition to 'remove Affleck as Batman' has now amassed over 80,000 signatures
Matt Damon has defended his friend and Good Will Hunting co-writer Ben Affleck from the internet's disgruntled Batman fans.
On Friday (August 23), Warner Bros announced that Affleck will join Henry Cavill's Superman in the sequel to Man Of Steel after Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin and The Dark Knight star Christian Bale all had been tipped to play the caped crusader in the 2015 film.
Affeck's casting has proved controversial, partly because his performance in an earlier superhero movie, 2003's Daredevil, wasn't very well-received. At the time of writing, an online petition to stop him from playing Batman has amassed over 80,000 signatures.
"I think it will be great. It will be terrific," Damon said of Affleck's Batman during an interview with The Times Of India. "I know there are a lot of people grousing on the internet. I just think it's kind of funny. You know, he's not playing King Lear. It's Batman! Certainly within his skill set. If anybody saw Argo or The Town and all the work he's been doing lately, it's way more nuanced and interesting and way more difficult than Batman! Batman just sits there with his cowl over his head and whispers in a kinda gruff voice at people."
Damon then added with a quip: "Bruce Wayne is the more challenging part of the role, and Ben will be great at that... But it's safe to say I won't be Robin."
Meanwhile, it was reported over the weekend that Affleck has actually signed up to play Batman in "multiple movies" provided further Man Of Steel sequels are made.
Affleck, who starred in and directed last year's Oscar-winning Argo, will be seen next month in Runner, Runner, a crime thriller co-starring Justin Timberlake and Gemma Arterton. It opens in UK cinemas on September 27 - click 'play' below to watch the trailer.
