Matt Damon on 'Bourne' return: 'It would be really tough'
Original 'Bourne' star says it's unlikely he'll team up with Jeremy Renner for the next movie
Matt Damon has admitted that it would be "really tough" for his character to appear in another Bourne movie.
Damon starred as amnesiac spy Jason Bourne in 2002's The Bourne Identity and reprised the role for two sequels, 2004's The Bourne Supremacy and 2007's Bourne Ultimatum. However, he opted not to return for this year's The Bourne Legacy, which instead centred on a character called Aaron Cross played by Jeremy Renner.
The Bourne Legacy has failed to match the success of Damon's last outing, but Universal Pictures confirmed last month (September 2012) that fans will "see future Bourne films". Meanwhile, franchise producer Frank Marshall has revealed that he wants Damon to team up with Renner for the next sequel.
However, in a new interview with Movieline, Damon said that events in The Bourne Legacy make his return unlikely. He explained: "From what I understand, it kind of relives [The Bourne Ultimatum] from a different perspective. What that means, because they use our actors and characters, is that whatever they said [in Legacy] is true, and so we'd have to acknowledge it in any Bourne movie that we'd do. And that makes it really tough."
Continuing, Damon suggested that it would be dangerous to stretch credibility too far, saying: "I don't think we can do the Dallas it-was-all-a-dream scenario. I don't think the audience would go for that after they paid money to see a movie."
In the past, Damon has always insisted that he will only make another Bourne movie if Paul Greengrass - who helmed Supremacy and Ultimatum - returns to the director's chair. He reiterated this during his interview with Movieline, adding: "There has not been any movement. I've always been open to it as long as Paul Greengrass directs, [but] I don't think he's going to do it."
