Matt Smith signs up for Ryan Gosling's 'How To Catch A Monster'
Smith will star alongside Christina Hendricks and Eva Mendes
Doctor Who star Matt Smith is set to take the male lead in Ryan Gosling’s How To Catch A Monster, reports Variety.
Smith will make his first US big screen performance alongside Christina Hendricks and Eva Mendes in Gosling's directorial debut.
Hendricks, who appeared opposite Gosling in Drive but is best known for her role in Mad Men, will play a single mother who gets "swept into a macabre and dark fantasy underworld when her teenage son discovers a secret road leading to an underwater town".
How To Catch A Monster also stars Ben Mendelsohn, who was most recently in The Dark Knight Rises, and little-known actor Rob Zabrecky.
Production is set to start this spring with Marc Platt, Adam Siegel, Michel Litvak and David Lancaster producing, along with Gosling via his Phantasma Films banner.
Platt told Indiewire that Gosling "has composed a beautifully haunting script and has a very clear vision of how he will bring it to life. His ability to draw audiences into his world as an actor will serve him well as a filmmaker."
Smith has just wrapped on his third season as Doctor Who, which stars Jenna-Louise Coleman as his new assistant, and has also recently directed short film Cargese for Sky Arts series Playhouse Presents.
How To Catch A Monster will be released at some point in 2014, with an official release date yet to be confirmed.
