Michael Caine gives his opinion on 'The Dark Knight Rises' ending - spoiler alert

Michael Caine has revealed his interpretation on the final scenes of this year's conclusion to Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises.

There have been various readings of the film's final scenes but, in an interview with the LA Times, Caine - who plays the role of Bruce Wayne's butler and confidant Alfred Pennyworth in the film - said that he didn't believe the ending was ambiguous.

The final scene shows Alfred in a cafe when he spots Bruce Wayne, as played by Christian Bale, and Selina Kyle, who was portrayed by Anne Hathaway. Despite speculation over whether the scene actually happened, Caine declared: "They were there. They were real. There was no imagination. They were real and he was with Anne, the cat lady, and i was happy ever after for him as I told him during the picture."

Caine also said that he'd already told Nolan that he was open minded about returning to the franchise, regardless of who was sitting in the director's chair. "I said to Chris, 'If they do it again and they ask me to be the butler, I'm going to do it,'" he said. "He said, 'I want 10 per cent.'"

Nolan insisted last month that The Dark Knight Rises would be his final ever Batman film. The film was made available to buy on Blu-ray and digital download earlier this week (December 3) - and since opening in cinemas back in July, the film has taken over $1.08 billion (£673 million) at the box office worldwide, making it Nolan's most successful Batman movie and the seventh biggest film ever.
