Michael Fassbender to star in new 'Macbeth' movie

Michael Fassbender is set to star in a new big screen adaptation of Macbeth.

The new Macbeth movie is being produced by the team behind The King's Speech, Screen Daily reports, and will be set in the 11th century using Shakespeare's original language. It will apparently offer a "visceral" take on the bard's classic story about an overly ambitious Scottish nobleman.

Aussie filmmaker Justin Kurzel, who made his name with the acclaimed 2011 true-crime drama Snowtown, is attached to direct from a script by Todd Louiso and Jacob Koskoff. Louiso and Koskoff previously teamed up to write The Marc Pease Experience, a 2009 comedy flick starring Ben Stiller and Jason Schwartzman.

Meanwhile, the film's producers are currently in the process of casting their Lady Macbeth, with "at least one Hollywood actress" said to be in the running. Shooting is due to begin later this year (2013).

Macbeth was first performed in 1611 and has been adapted for film and TV numerous times over the years. Coincidentally, Michael Fassbender's X-Men co-star James McAvoy has recently starred in a West End revival of the play.
