Moody new trailer for Ryan Gosling's reunion with 'Drive' director - watch

A moody new trailer for Only God Forgives, Ryan Gosling's reunion with Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn, has been released. Scroll down and click 'play' to watch it.

The film stars Gosling as an American criminal living in exile in Bangkok, where he runs a Thai boxing club as a front for a drugs business. When his brother is killed for murdering a prostitute, his mother lands in town and orders her son to exact revenge.

Kristin Scott Thomas co-stars as the mother, an apparently monstrous character Refn (pictured right) has described as "Lady Macbeth crossed with Donatella Versace".

The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May and received a mixed reaction from critics. It's said to be incredibly violent and Gosling, brooding as ever, utters just 17 lines of dialogue during its 90-minute running time. Scott Thomas admitted at Cannes: "This kind of film is really not my thing. Films where this kind of violence happens, I don’t like watching them at all."

Meanwhile, Gosling has said: "This is the most extreme level I've ever been taken to." Only God Forgives opens in the US this Friday (July 19) before arriving in UK cinemas on August 2.
