A reboot of Murder, She Wrote is in the works at US network NBC.
Oscar-winning actress Octavia Spencer will take on the role made famous by Angela Lansbury in what Deadline describes as a "re-imagining" of the classic series.
NBC has given the project a "put pilot commitment", meaning the network will pay substantial penalties if it decides not to air the pilot episode. Former Desperate Housewives executive producer Alexandra Cunningham will write and serve as an executive producer and the revival is said to have a "light, contemporary" tone in the vein of Bones. Lansbury has apparently been asked to be a part of the project in some capacity.
Spencer told Deadline: "I've always considered myself an armchair detective and in a recent meeting with [NBC chairman] Bob Greenblatt, he asked me what type of character would be able to lure me to TV. Naturally, I said JB Fletcher meets Colombo… And here we are." She also hailed Cunningham as a "brilliant writer who shares my love for all things mysterious and Angela Lansbury".
Lansbury, now 88, starred as amateur detective JB Fletcher in 12 seasons of Murder, She Wrote between 1984 and 1996, netting 12 consecutive Emmy nominations but surprisingly never winning. Spencer is best known for her role in 2011's The Help, for which she won an Oscar for best supporting actress.
