Natalie Portman joins Michael Fassbender in new 'Macbeth' movie

Natalie Portman is to play Lady Macbeth opposite Michael Fassbender in a new big screen adaptation of Macbeth.

The new Macbeth movie is being produced by the team behind The King's Speech and it emerged yesterday (April 30) that Fassbender has been cast in the title role.

The film will be set in the 11th century using Shakespeare's original language and will apparently offer a "visceral" take on the bard's classic story about an overly ambitious Scottish nobleman. Aussie director Justin Kurzel (Snowtown) is attached to direct and shooting is due to begin later this year, Screen Daily reports.

Portman and Fassbender recently worked together on a new Terrence Malick movie about sex and betrayal on the music scene in Austin, Texas – home to the annual SXSW festival. The film, which is currently untitled, is expected to be released later this year (2013). Portman will also be seen in Marvel's Thor: The Dark World, which hits cinemas on November 8.

Macbeth was first performed in 1611 and has been adapted for film and TV numerous times over the years. Coincidentally, Fassbender's X-Men co-star James McAvoy has recently starred in a West End revival of the play.
