'Neighbours' launches competition to find new theme tune singer

Neighbours has launched a competition to find a new singer for its iconic theme tune.

British fans of the Aussie soap can enter now on the Neighbours: Remixed website by recording their vocals over the backing track provided. The deadline for entries is 12pm on March 1.

Channel 5 will then select its five favourites before launching a public vote to find the most popular British hopeful. The winner will be flown to Melbourne to compete against an Australian contender in a judged head-to-head contest for the ultimate prize: the chance to record the new Neighbours theme tune.

Neighbours star Ryan Moloney - Jarrod "Toadfish" Rebecchi in the long-running soap - has made a video containing entry tips. Scroll down and click 'play' to watch it.

The music for the Neighbours theme tune was composed by British songwriter Tony Hatch, who also wrote Petula Clark's 1964 hit 'Downtown', with his wife Jackie Trent penning the lyrics. To date, six different versions have been broadcast. The current theme tune features vocals by an Australian singer called Sandra de Jong.
