New Morgan Freeman film ‘Momentum’ takes in just £46 at UK box office

The thriller had a budget of $20 million

Morgan Freeman’s new film Momentum has experienced flopped at the UK box office, taking just £46 in its opening weekend despite boasting a $20 million budget.

The thriller, also starring Quantum of Solace Bond girl Olga Kurylenko, is the directorial debut of Stephen Campanelli, a former member of Clint Eastwood’s production crew.

Opening on Friday (November 20), Momentum was only shown in ten cinemas during its opening weekend, bringing in £4.60 per cinema. Two cinemas sold no tickets for the film.

The film was recently labelled “one of the worst films you won’t see in 2015” by Empire magazine, while Mark Kermode described it as “utter pants” in The Observer.

Director Campanelli recently told Geekscape of how he convinced Freeman to star in the film: “I did three movies with Morgan [while I was] a camera operator, and we’ve gotten along very well. We’ve become like friends, and he said to me, ‘When you get a movie and you get to direct it, if you have a role for me, I’d love to do it.’ Then this came out and I read the part of the senator’s role and I went, ‘Oh my God, Morgan would be perfect for this.’”
