New 'Popeye' movie secures director?

A new 3D animated film version of Popeye has reportedly secured a director.

According to Variety, Sony Pictures Animation has recruited Genndy Tartakovsky to helm the long-mooted movie.

Tartokovky has recently finished directing Hotel Transylvania, an upcoming 3D animated comedy film starring Adam Sandler as the voice of Dracula. He is well-known for his work on numerous animated TV series, including Star Wars: Clone Wars, Samurai Jack and Dexter's Laboratory.

The new Popeye film, which is being produced by Avi and Ari Arad, was first announced in 2010. The script has been written by David Ronn and Jay Scherick, who were among the writers on last year's film version of The Smurfs.

Popeye the Sailor, a fictional cartoon character created by Elzie Crisler Segar, began appearing in comic strips in 1929. He has since appeared in countless animated film shorts and TV cartoons. In 1980, Robin Williams played the famous sailor in a live-action film version of Popeye directed by Robert Altman.

Work on the new Popeye 3D animated film is expected to begin in the autumn.
