New 'Saw' movie rumoured to be in the works

The most recent instalment in the gory franchise was 2010's 'Saw 3D'

A new Saw movie is rumoured to be in the works.

Specialist horror website Bloody Disgusting reports that Lionsgate, the makers of the gory franchise, is being "incredibly active in developing" an eighth instalment.

However, the website also notes that nothing is official and says the film's direction has yet to be set in stone. Lionsgate is apparently still deciding whether the mooted new Saw movie should be a remake or a totally new film, Saw 8, though the latter is said to be more likely.

Created by director James Wan and screenwriter Leigh Whannell, the first Saw film was released in 2004 and took over $103 million (£64 million) at the box office worldwide from a tiny budget of $1.2 million (£750,000). Sequels followed once a year until 2010, when the most recent instalment, Saw 3D, came out. The eight films to date have grossed a collective $873 million (£544 million) at cinemas globally.

The films follow the gruesome exploits of a psychotic serial killer known as Jigsaw, who never murders anyone directly, but instead devises traps that set two or more victims against each other to find out whose will to survive is greatest.
