Director Peter Jackson recently revealed that the second film in his The Hobbit trilogy has "less humour" than the first. The trilogy opener, An Unexpected Journey, came out last December (2012) and went on to gross a shade over $1 billion (£660 million) at the box office worldwide. The second instalment, The Desolation Of Smaug, is set to open in UK cinemas on December 13 this year (2013).
"This has less humour in it for sure," Jackson told Empire. "The first film was where we allowed ourselves to try and capture something of the children's book, but it is really not appropriate to do that any more. Some pretty serious stuff is going down and it is important that we don't undercut that now."
Alongside Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, Ian McKellen returns alongside, Cate Blanchett and Orlando Bloom, who reprises his role as Legolas from Jackson's The Lord Of The Rings trilogy.
Meanwhile, Lost actress Evangeline Lilly joins the cast as elf warrior Tauriel, an original creation who does not feature in JRR Tolkien's novel.
Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy will conclude with There And Back Again in December 2014.
