Radio 1 DJ and ex X Factor judge Nick Grimshaw is planning a Top of the Pops style show which will get music back on television.

The last episode of BBC's Top of the Pops was aired in July of 2006, making this summer the tenth anniversary of its departure from UK screens.

Speaking to The Sun, Grimshaw said he's planning a music show as it's "what the country needs". "I'm writing a show with my friend Aimee," he continued. "We've just started writing it. We're in talks to do a show."

"It's a music show, it'll be a show getting music on television. It's what we need so I'm going to make it happen. It's my mission."

It was announced today (June 1) that Nick Grimshaw and his fellow ex X Factor judges have been replaced with Sharon Osbourne, Nicole Scherzinger and Louis Walsh for the 2016 return.

Explaining his departure, he said that appearing on the show alongside his Radio 1 programme was too much work.

"I love going to work and I like to be busy," he told The Daily Star of his decision. "But doing X Factor and the radio was work all the time. I was doing the [BBC Radio 1] show in the morning and then working on X Factor from midday to midnight. It was every day. I will miss X Factor but I don’t regret my decision to go."

Top of the Pops was first aired back in 1964 and featured performances from the likes of David Bowie, John Lennon, The Smiths and the Spice Girls.
