James Cameron is currently working on two new Avatar movies, his producer has confirmed.
Speaking in May (2012), Cameron suggested that he could shoot three sequels at the same time, telling Movieweb: "I'm in the Avatar business. Period. That's it. I'm making Avatar 2, Avatar 3, maybe Avatar 4."
However, producer Jon Landau has now confirmed that talk of Avatar 4 is premature, telling the Courier-Post:"We [are] doing two [sequels] back-to-back, but not a third." Landau and Cameron are longtime collaborators, having also worked together on 1997's Titanic and 2002's Solaris.
In a separate interview with Collider, Landau revealed that Cameron's team are making good progress on the sequels, saying: "The scripts are pretty far along. We have a team of people already working on the film at Manhattan Beach Studios. We've been working with WETA Digital on technologies."
However, he refused to commit to exact release dates, saying: "We're going to make the best possible version of these movies, and they will come out when they are exactly that."
Released in 2009, Avatar became the highest-grossing movie ever with worldwide box office takings exceeding $2.7 billion (£1.7 billion). Last month (August), Cameron announced that the movie will be released on Blu-Ray 3D in October (2012).
