Disney has commissioned a sequel to Oz The Great And The Powerful, according to a report.
Oz The Great And The Powerful opens in cinemas today (March 8) and is conceived as a kind of prequel to 1939's classic The Wizard Of Oz starring Judy Garland. In the new movie, James Franco stars as Oscar Diggs aka The Wizard Of Oz, while Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz and Mila Kunis play witches of varying degrees of goodness.
Directed by Sam Raimi (Spider-Man, The Evil Dead), the film cost an estimated $200 million (£133 million) to make, but Disney is said to be so confident of a hit that a sequel is already in the works.
Mitchell Kapner, who co-wrote the Great And The Powerful script with David Lindsay-Abaire, was hired "several months ago" to pen a follow-up, Variety reports.
Plot details are currently unknown, though Kipner will be able to draw inspiration from L Frank Baum's classic children's book The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz, upon which the Judy Garland film is based. However, anything added to the story by the makers of the 1939 movie will be off limits, Variety points out, because Warner Bros owns the rights to it.
