Paranormal Activity 3 has scared off UK box office competition on its opening weekend.

The horror sequel has beaten last week's number one Johnny English Reborn into second place, and comfortably beaten the week's other big opener Contagion, taking over £3 million and emerging top of the chart.

Its total is marginally less than the £3,593,762 taken by the first Paranormal Activity film when it opened in 2009. You can watch the trailer at the top of the page. The top five is completed by The Lion King 3D and Real Steel.

Elsewhere, Tilda Swinton's critically acclaimed We Need To Talk About Kevin, adapted from the Lionel Shriver novel, opened to £500,000 ticket sales and a number seven placing.
