Patrick Stewart has revealed that he could star opposite Hugh Jackman in the next Wolverine movie.

Last month (January) Stewart said that he and Ian McKellen would not have roles in the next X-Men film, X-Men: Apocalypse, which is set for release on May 27, 2016. However, Stewart has now revealed that he was partly mistaken.

"I understand that it seems to be very unlikely that I will be in the next X-Men movie, which is almost getting ready to start shooting in Montreal," he told The Oregonian. "But Magneto, Ian McKellen, is certainly going to be in it."

However, Stewart went on to tease that he could play a part in a forthcoming X-Men spin-off film. "And what I'm very excited about is that we have been talking about a Wolverine movie, which would team Hugh Jackman and myself together," he said. "Wolverine and Professor Xavier. That would be a very different sort of X-Men from the four movies that I've already done."

The next Wolverine film, currently untitled, is set for release on March 3, 2017. It will serve as the sequel to 2013's The Wolverine, which was directed by Walk The Line's James Mangold, who is expected to return for the follow-up.

Meanwhile, director Bryan Singer has recently unveiled three new cast members for the next X-Men film, X-Men: Apocalypse. Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner – Sansa Stark in the HBO fantasy series – will play Jean Grey; The Tree of Life's Tye Sheridan will portray Cyclops and Alexandra Shipp, who starred as Aaliyah in a recent US TV biopic, has been cast as Storm.

They join returning cast members James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, Jennifer Lawrence and Evan Peters, as well as Oscar Isaac, who has been cast as Apocalypse, the villain that gives the film its title. Rose Byrne is also confirmed to be reprising her role as CIA agent Moira MacTaggert from 2011's X-Men: First Class and Hugh Jackman has recently hinted that he will be returning as Wolverine.
