The release date for Ridley Scott's Prometheus sequel has been revealed.
Prometheus 2 will open in cinemas in March 2016, with reports also claiming that scriptwriter Michael Green - who co-wrote The Green Lantern and has also worked with Scott on his Blade Runner sequel - has been hired to rewrite Jack Paglen's original screenplay.
The Wrap says that the film's storyline will be similar to director Scott's first Alien film and Michael Fassbender is also set to return. He will reportedly play multiple versions of his android from the original picture, David.
Released in June 2012, Prometheus was conceived as a semi-prequel to Scott's 1979 classic Alien. Fassbender, Idris Elba and Noomi Rapace starred as members of a spaceship crew attempting to prevent the extinction of the human race. The film received a somewhat mixed response from critics and sci-fi fans but performed well at the box office, grossing over $400 million (£255 million) worldwide.
In addition to a Prometheus sequel, Scott is also working on a follow-up film to his 1982 sci-fi thriller Blade Runner. In October last year, Harrison Ford said he had spoken to Scott about the possibility of returning for the sequel.
