Tough-guy actor Ray Liotta has signed up to appear in the sequel to The Muppets.

At present, Liotta's part in the film is being kept "under wraps", reports Variety. The Hollywood veteran is no stranger to the furry crew, having played a gate guard in 1999's Muppets In Space.

Disney has recently scheduled the sequel to last year's The Muppets for a March 2014 release. Ricky Gervais will play the main human character alongside Kermit and Miss Piggy, while Golden Globes host Tina Fey is set to appear as a Russian gulag prison guard.

The cast also includes Modern Family actor Ty Burrell, who has signed up to play a lazy Interpol agent. The story is said to be a "European-centric adventure" and director James Bobin will begin filming in London this month (January 2013).

Also directed by Bobin, last year's The Muppets was the first big screen outing for Kermit and the gang in 12 years. The film was a hit at the box office, grossing over $158 million (£98 million) worldwide. Bret McKenzie won an Oscar for his original song 'Man Or Muppet' and is writing new songs for the sequel.
