Report: Steve Carell to return for final episode of 'The Office'
The US remake will bow out after nine seasons with a special 60-minute episode airing on May 16
Steve Carell will reportedly make a cameo appearance in the last ever episode of The Office.
Carell starred as hapless manager Michael Scott in the first seven seasons of the US remake, but left in 2011 to concentrate on his film career. In more recent episodes, his office boss role has been filled by James Spader and Catherine Tate.
Since Carell's exit, ratings have dipped and last August show runner Greg Daniels announced that the current season will be the last. The Office will bow out after nearly 200 episodes with a 60-minute special airing in the US on May 16.
Daniels has consistently denied that Carell will return for the final episode, but TVLine claims to have been informed that the show runner is simply playing coy. Carell will feature, apparently, but his role will be "more of a cameo than a full-fledged guest appearance".
Meanwhile, former The Office stars Mindy Kaling and BJ Novak are already confirmed to be returning for the final episode. Ricky Gervais, co-creator and star of the British original, is rumoured to have turned down the chance to make an appearance.
