'Resident Evil 6' gets September 2014 release date
However, the film has no official title yet and plot details remain unknown
A sixth Resident Evil film is on its way and has reportedly been given a release date.
According to horror website Shock Till You Drop, Sony Pictures and Screen Gems have scheduled the next film for September 12, 2014. However, the new movie currently has no official title and plot details remain unknown.
The most recent film in the series, Resident Evil: Retribution, opened in cinemas last September (2012) and grossed an impressive $222 million (£147 million) worldwide. Speaking shortly after its release, Sony executive Rory Bruer confirmed that the studio wants the franchise to continue, saying: "It ain't ending here."
The original Resident Evil film, based on the Capcom video game of the same name, was released in 2002 and has since spawned four sequels. The movie franchise has now grossed a total of $897 million (£593 million) worldwide.
All five films to date were scripted by Paul WS Anderson, who also served as director on the first, fourth and fifth instalments. Anderson married franchise star Milla Jovovich in 2009 and the pair have previously revealed they are keen to make a sixth movie.
