Robert De Niro and Shia LaBeouf eye roles as father and son spy duo

Robert De Niro and Shia LaBeouf are reportedly eyeing roles as a father and son spy duo.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actors are "in talks" to star in Spy's Kid, a film based on the true story of a disgraced secret agent who recruits his son to continue his dodgy double dealing.

De Niro would play Jim Nicholson, who was sentenced to 23 years in prison in 1996 after becoming the highest-ranking CIA officer ever to be found guilty of espionage. LaBeouf would co-star as his son Nathan, who became his father's protégé and spent 18 months selling secrets to the Russians.

The film is based on a six-part series of newspaper articles on the Nicholsons by journalist Bryan Denson that were published in 2011. However, the project has yet to hire a writer and the actors apparently won't make their final decisions until they see the script.

Meanwhile, DJ Caruso is reportedly "in negotiations" to direct. Caruso and LaBeouf have worked together before, on the director's 2007's slasher flick Disturbia and his 2008 thriller Eagle Eye.
