Robert De Niro replaces Nicolas Cage in new action thriller 'Killing Season'

Robert De Niro has replaced Nicolas Cage in forthcoming action thriller Killing Season. Cage was set to reunite with his old Face/Off co-star John Travolta in Mark Steven Johnson's new film, but De Niro will now act in his place, reports Total Film.

The film is set in the Appalachian Mountains and sees a military veteran (De Niro) befriend a 'European tourist' (Travolta). However, it later transpires that Travolta's character is a Serbian soldier and the pair end up in a one-on-one battle.

According to Deadline.com, production on the film is due to begin on January 16, 2012, meaning a release before 2013 is unlikely.

Travolta had been rumoured to also be reuniting in another forthcoming film, Sea Trial with Cage and is slated to appear in Savages and The Expendables 2 next year.

Meanwhile, De Niro is due to star in two other movies, Freelancers and Red Lights, in 2012.
