Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow is a 'huge part' of 'The Avengers 2', says Joss Whedon

Whedon's sequel, now officially titled 'The Avengers: Age Of Ultron', is set for release in 2015

Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow is a 'huge part' of 'The Avengers 2', says Joss Whedon

Writer-director Joss Whedon has confirmed that Scarlett Johansson's character Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow will have a significant role in his second The Avengers movie.

"Natasha is a huge part of the sequel because you do want to concentrate on the people who don't have their own franchises," Whedon revealed in a conversation streamed live from Nerd HQ at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend. "Although she's in [Captain America 2] and she's great."

Continuing, Whedon explained: "She was the most fun for me because she's not a hero, you know, and it's something that I read - and I feel bad that I can't remember who wrote the book - but it's in one of the books explaining: 'These guys are heroes, you are a spy. It's a different thing, it's a different skill set, and you don't have their moral high ground or any of that good stuff.' And that just makes her so interesting to me. So yeah, the stuff I've got going on with her in the second one is killer."

Whedon also revealed at Comic-Con that his sequel has been officially named The Avengers: Age Of Ultron. Though it shares its title with a comic book series called Age Of Ultron published by Marvel earlier this year (2013), Whedon has confirmed that the film won't use the same storyline. "We're doing our own version of the origin story of Ultron," he explained in a Marvel video interview.

Ultron, a well-known supervillain from the Marvel universe, is described in his official bio as "a criminally insane rogue sentient robot dedicated to the conquest and the extermination of humanity".

Last month (June), Robert Downey Jr signed a deal to return as Iron Man in the new Avengers movie. The rest of the cast has yet to be confirmed but Marvel has promised a mix of "favourites from the first Avengers film and new Marvel characters never before seen on the big screen". It's now a pretty safe bet that Johansson will be back as Black Widow.

Whedon is currently working on his script for The Avengers: Age Of Ultron and shooting is due to begin in London early next year (2014). Marvel has set a release date of May 1, 2015. In the meantime, Johansson will be seen as Black Widow in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which opens in cinemas on April 4, 2014.
