Sofia Coppola to direct 'The Little Mermaid' remake

Sofia Coppola will direct a new remake of The Little Mermaid, according to reports.

Deadline reports that Coppola, who has previously made films such as Lost In Translation, Somewhere and The Bling Ring, while Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas scriptwriter Caroline Thomas will pen a screenplay.

Reports suggest that Universal are keen to begin work on the project as soon as possible. Coppola's last film, The Bling Ring, starred Harry Potter actress Emma Watson. A satirical black comedy, it was based on a Vanity Fair article which detailed lives of a group of teenagers who integrated themselves with celebrities and socialites in Hollywood before stealing thousands of pounds worth of jewellery and other possessions from them.

Coppola directed her first film, The Virgin Suicides, in 1999. In 2003, she helmed the critically-acclaimed Lost In Translation, for which she received an Academy Award for Best Director.
