'Star Trek 3' will shoot next year (2014), Zachary Quinto reportedly reveals

The next Star Trek film will go into production next year (2014), Zachary Quinto has apparently revealed.

"Star Trek 3 should be filming, I suppose, next year. It's going to be made a lot quicker than the last one. That's the plan, although nothing is confirmed yet," the actor is quoted by BuzzHub to have said. Quinto, who stars as Spok in the sci-fi franchise, was reportedly speaking during a public interview at the Galway Film Fleadh, Ireland's leading film festival, on Friday (July 12).

Quinto is also reported to have said that JJ Abrams is planning to return as director but didn't elaborate any further on this statement. Abrams is due to start shooting the new Star Wars movie early next year, which would make filming another big-budget blockbuster in 2014 pretty tricky.

Since its release this May (2013), Abrams' Star Trek Into Darkness has raked in over $440 million (£290 million) at the box office worldwide - exceeding the total gross of his 2009 reboot Star Trek, which took around $385 million (£255 million) worldwide.

The Star Trek shoot stretched out over nearly six months, from early November 2007 to late March 2008, while Star Trek Into Darkness was filmed over a slightly shorter period of five months from January to May 2012.
