Taylor Swift has signed up for her first live-action film role in three years.
The pop singer will star opposite Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges in a big screen adaptation of Lois Lowry's 1993 young adult novel The Giver, Variety reports.
The film is set in a supposedly utopian future society in which only one individual, The Giver, is allowed to remember the human race's painful past in case it becomes necessary to use it. Swift will play a character called Rosemary, the last teenager to be mentored by Bridges' The Giver before he meets his successor Jonas, played by former Home and Away star Brenton Thwaites. Streep will appear as a villainous and powerful figure known as the Chief Elder.
The film's bumper ensemble cast also includes Katie Holmes, Alexander Skarsgard and Shameless's Cameron Monaghan. Director Phillip Noyce (Salt, Rabbit-Proof Frence) plans to start shooting in Cape Town on October 7 and the film will open in cinemas in August 2014.
Swift's big screen acting experience is limited. She previously played a small part in the 2010 ensemble comedy Valentine's Day's and took on a voice role in last year's computer-animated Dr Seuss adaptation The Lorax.
