Terminally ill 'Star Trek' fan dies after JJ Abrams grants him advance screening of 'Star Trek Into Darkness'

Dan Craft, a terminally ill Star Trek fan who was recently granted an advance screening of Star Trek Into Darkness by director JJ Abrams, has died.

Craft, who was director of the New York Asian Film Festival, was allowed to view an early cut of the forthcoming Star Trek movie nearly five months before its release date after an internet campaign to grant his final wish was launched.

A statement yesterday, posted on the New York Asian Film Festival's Facebook, confirmed the 42-year-old had lost his fight with cancer.

The statement read: "Last night around 10:15pm, Dan Craft, who has been a member of Subway Cinema since 2004, passed away. His wife and brother were with him when he went, and he wasn't in any pain. He'd been a bit loopy for a few days as his liver failed and toxins built up in his blood, and on Thursday his wife asked him if he needed to go to the bathroom. 'I'm going,' he proclaimed, 'into the future'."

Craft had recently attended an IMAX screening of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in the hope of seeing the nine-minute preview of Star Trek Into Darkness that is supposed to be shown beforehand.

After the preview failed to play, a friend who goes by the username ‘ideeeyut’ launched an appeal on social news site Reddit to help Dan to see the film. The appeal soon gathered pace on other social media sites including Facebook and Twitter. JJ Abrams was made aware of the campaign and arranged for Craft to see a special screening of the movie just days before his death.

Star Trek Into Darkness is due to open in UK cinemas on May 17. Alongside Chris Pine as Captain Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock, the film also stars Sherlock's Benedict Cumberbatch as a mysterious villain called John Harrison. Scroll down and click 'play' to watch the trailer.
