The Great Gatsby was shot in Luhrmann's native Australia, although Fitzgerald's story is set on Long Island's North Shore and in New York during the summer of 1922.

The Great Gatsby has been adapted for film many times before, with the most famous version being Jack Clayton's 1974 offering. In that particular film, Robert Redford took on the lead role of Jay Gatsby, with a script written by Francis Ford Coppola.
