The Lonely Island reveal details of new film 'Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping'

Comedy trio announce details for much tipped new comedy movie

Internet sensation The Lonely Island have today announced the title and further details for their rumoured full length film, it has emerged today (March 1).

The comedy trio - comprised of comedians Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone - have been teasing details of an apparent film release since 2015.

Now, according to Pitchfork, the movie will be called Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping and will hit cinemas on July 3. The trio have also confirmed that the film will be produced by Sarah Silverman, Tim Meadows and Maya Rudolph. According to a press release, the Popstar movie "goes behind the scenes as singer/rapper Conner4Real (Samberg) faces a crisis of popularity after his sophomore album flops, leaving his fans, sycophants and rivals all wondering what to do when he’s no longer the dopest star of all."

Chaffer and Taccone directed the film, which was written and co-produced by the full trio. Watch below for Samberg unveiling details and the official film poster on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

The film's title had previously been rumoured as Connor4real in May 2015

Recently, it was announced that The Inbetweeners star James Buckley would joined the cast of The Lonely Island's spoof music documentary film.

Though it was originally supposed to be "top secret", the film's title, Connor4Real, has now been revealed and it's understood to be a send-up of "fluffy music documentaries" like Justin Bieber's Never Say Never and Katy Perry's Part Of Me. Andy Samberg is starring as a rapper who is forced to reunite with his former boyband when his latest rap album tanks.

The comedy music trio - Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone - started shooting the film in Los Angeles earlier this month (May). The film's cast also includes Sarah Silverman, who will appear as the rapper's long-suffering but quick-witted publicist, and Tim Meadows, who will play his frazzled manager. Deadline reports that Buckley - best known for playing boastful Jay in The Inbetweeners - will appear as a member of Samberg's entourage called Sponge.

Schaffer and Taccone are directing the film with Samberg, Schaffer and Taccone serving as producers alongside Judd Apatow. British actress Imogen Poots has also been linked to the film as a love interest for Samberg's character.

The Lonely Island first found success in the mid-00s when they were hired as Saturday Night Live writers and their videos for spoof songs like 'Dick In A Box', 'Jizz In My Pants' and 'I Just Had Sex' went viral online. They have now released three albums and collaborated with artists including Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar, Nicki Minaj and Snoop Dogg.
