'The Road' actor Kodi Smit-McPhee signs up for 'Planet Of The Apes' sequel

The Road actor Kodi Smit-McPhee has signed up to play a lead role in the new Planet Of The Apes movie.

16-year-old Smit-McPhee, who most recently voiced the title character in the Oscar-nominated animated feature ParaNorman, is the latest to be attached to the sequel following the addition of fellow Australian actor Jason Clarke last week, reports Deadline.

Titled Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, the sequel to 2011's Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes starring James Franco, is set to begin filming this spring. Franco has admitted that he is unlikely to return, even for a cameo appearance, but motion capture specialist Andy Serkis will be back as rebellious chimp Caesar.

The sequel will be set 15 years after the last movie, says The Hollywood Reporter, but plot details are being kept under wraps and Clarke's role is currently unknown. The script has been written by Mark Bomback, whose previous credits include Unstoppable and Total Recall.

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes is being helmed by Cloverfeld director Matt Reeves after Rupert Wyatt, who called the shots on the 2011 movie, dropped out in September last year (2012). The sequel is slated for release in May 2014.
