'The Thick Of It' creator Armando Iannucci in Twitter spat with Alastair Campbell
Comedian and political figure lock horns over OBE row
The Thick Of It creator Armando Iannucci and former Labour spin doctor Alastair Campbell have become embroiled in a Twitter spat after the comedian accepted an OBE.
It was announced that Iannucci, who has worked on acclaimed TV shows such as The Day Today and I'm Alan Partridge in addition to films such as In The Loop, would be given the honour today (June 16). But Campbell – who has often been cited as the inspiration for The Thick Of It's foul-mouthed Director Of Communications Malcolm Tucker – said he did not approve of his decision.
So @AIannucci OBE joins the Establishment he claims to deride. Malcolm Tucker and I do not approve of honours system— Alastair Campbell (@campbellclaret) June 16, 2012
However, Iannucci replied by alluding to Campbell's involvement in the Iraq war, writing:
@campbellclaret It's probably more Establishment to order your army to march into other countries for no reason. Swings and roundabouts.— Armando Iannucci (@Aiannucci) June 16, 2012
The pair then continued their row, which you can read below, as Ianucci responded to Campbell's taunt about the impact "three little letters" can have by simply writing "wmd" - a reference of claims that Campbell had "beefed up" the British government's dossier on Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction.
@Aiannucci you see, your wit a bit tired and blunt already. Three little letters can have more impact than you realise. Tut tut— Alastair Campbell (@campbellclaret) June 16, 2012

Iannucci's latest project Veep, which is a comedy satire set in the offices of a fictional US Vice President, is currently being shown on US TV channel HBO and is set to be broadcast in the UK on Sky Atlantic from June 25.
