'The Thing' remake set for October 2011 release

The remake of the classic sci-fi horror The Thing will open on October 14 next year. The release date was announced by studio Universal on the company's official Twitter page, Twitter.com/universalpics, today (November 24).

The prequel to John Carpenter's 1982 remake of Howard Hawks' 1951 The Thing From Another World is to be directed by Matthijs van Heijningen. It will be written by Eric Heisserer (from a previous draft by Battlestar Galactica showrunner Ronald D Moore).

Mary Elizabeth Winstead stars as the palaeontologist unearthing the shape-shifter's ship in the Antarctic ice. The film is currently being shot in Toronto.
