'This Is Spinal Tap' director Rob Reiner making film about Proposition 8

Reiner plans film about legal battle over same-sex marriage

'This Is Spinal Tap' director Rob Reiner making film about Proposition 8

Rob Reiner is planning a film based on the legal controversy surrounding Proposition 8 in the US.

The This Is Spinal Tap director revealed that he is involved with the new film about the California initiative than banned same-sex marriage. It was found to be unconstitutional by the federal court district judge.

Reiner told The Hollywood Reporter that the project holds a personal connection for him, as it "is based a little bit on the court challenge to Proposition 8, which I have been involved in."

The director-turned-activist helped the campaign to defeat it in the courts along with the American Foundation For Equal Rights. He recently took part in a one-night celebrity reading in New York of 8, a play written by Dustin Lance Black based on the trial transcripts.

Reiner was one of the biggest fundraisers for the legal effort. He added: "We have been involved every step of the way. Right now, we're waiting for the Ninth Circuit to come with their appeal decision. Either we'll win, and it will be expunged in California. If it gets appealed, it might go to the US Supreme Court. Those are the things that are most important to me. Prop 8, if we win that, will be the last big piece of the civil rights puzzle that will be put into place."

He is also closely involved with the campaign to get President Obama re-elected, although he qualified: "I don’t know if we can."
