Tom Cruise is officially on board for a new Mission: Impossible movie.

The actor has signed a deal to star in and produce Mission: Impossible 5, Deadline reports. However, Paramount Pictures and production company Skydance have yet to announce a target release date.

The film's writer and director haven't been confirmed either, but Christopher McQuarrie is rumoured to be in the frame for both roles. McQuarrie recently wrote and directed Jack Reacher, an action thriller starring Cruise that came out last December (2012).

Cruise first appeared as elite secret agent Ethan Hunt in 1996's Mission: Impossible and has reprised the role in three sequels. The most recent instalment, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, came out in 2011 and grossed nearly $700 million (£450 million) at the box office worldwide - the highest total of Cruise's career.

Cruise's most recent film, sci-fi flick Oblivion, arrived in cinemas last month (April) and has grossed over $220 million (£140 million) so far. He will next be seen in another sci-fi film, All You Need Is Kill, which is set for release next March.
