Tom Cruise tops list of Hollywood's highest-paid actors

Tom Cruise has been named the highest-paid actor in Hollywood.

According to Forbes magazine, Cruise earned more than twice as much as any other actor last year. Cruise, currently involved in divorce proceedings with wife Katie Holmes, took home $75 million (£48 million) between May 2011 and May 2012 thanks to his roles in Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol and upcoming sci-fi film Oblivion.

Last year's highest-paid actor, Leonardo DiCaprio, placed equal second on the list with Adam Sandler after each collected $37 million (£24 million). The list of top ten earners also includes Johnny Depp, Will Smith and British comedy star Sacha Baron Cohen, who placed joint sixth with earnings of $30 million (£19 million).

Further down the list, Twilight stars Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner placed equal tenth with earnings of $26.5 million (£17 million). Last month Forbes revealed that their co-star in the vampire films, Kristen Stewart, had taken home $34.5 million (£22 million) in 12 months to become the highest-paid actress in Hollywood.

Explaining how it compiled its annual highest-paid list, Forbes said: "To determine who the highest-paid actors in Hollywood are, we considered upfront pay, profit participation, residuals, endorsements and advertising work. We talked to manager, agents, lawyers and other in-the-know folks to come up with our estimates. We did not deduct for things like agent fees or the expenses related to being a celebrity."

The 10 highest-paid actresses according to Forbes are:

1. Tom Cruise ($75 million) (£48 million)
2. Leonardo DiCaprio ($37 million) (£24 million)
