'Twilight' director thought script was 'horrible' at first

Catherine Hardwicke was initially reluctant to get on board

Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke was unimpressed with the project at first.

Hardwicke, who made the first movie in the epic vampire saga, has revealed that she initially found the scripts "horrible", changing her mind only when she read Stephanie Meyer's original novel.

She told New York Magazine:

I thought the script was horrible, but then I looked it up on the internet and I thought, 'OK, it’s based on a book and people tend to like it. There's gotta be something there'.

"So I read the book and I thought it captured that feeling of being madly in love. And I thought, 'That's kind of a good challenge, to see if, as a filmmaker, I could make you feel that giddy, crazy'."

But Hardwicke only agreed to continue if the studio, Summit, agreed to let her rewrite the script completely, to which they agreed. Since departing the Twilight series, the director has worked on the similarly-flavoured Red Riding Hood.
